Shifting Angle (2012), The Gender under Reflection, New Zero Art Space, Yangon MM
Shifting Angle is a performance I created for an art event in Yangon, Myanmar, exploring female identity and inviting self-reflection.
Through this performance, I aimed to raise awareness, foster respect, and explore the complex relationship women have with their bodies amid patriarchal challenges.
The piece features a large wooden frame draped with bright pink sheer fabric, symbolising female genitalia and creating a private yet accessible space for women to come together in solidarity.
I invited each woman to spend a few moments with me, and each found me surprisingly undressed. I did this for myself, not to feel ashamed of my body as it is, and for all the women in the audience. For millennia, male artists have represented women through the male gaze. I wanted to present myself nude for the gaze of the women around me.
At the end of the performance, all the women came to hug me with a sense of liberation and lightness.
